Annotated Bibliography

This Annotated Bibliography is written in collaboration with Alyssa Robinson for our Writing, Research, and Technology class. In the class, we have to write a paper in collaboration, and these are the sources that we use throughout our paper. You can find that paper by clicking here.

Berry, Wendell. Pleasures of Eating from WHAT ARE PEOPLE FOR? Used by permission of North Point Press, a division of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, LLC, 1990.
The Pleasures of Eating talks about how to get city people back into the agricultural act. Wendell talks the whole time about how people are eating just to eat, not thinking about what is going into their mouths to enjoy it, for pleasure. This article talks a lot about the grocery store, and that people don't think about where the food comes from before it goes on the shelf. Consumers need to step back and think about the quality of the food, where it came from, how it was produced and prepared, the ingredients, additives, and residues. The food industrialists are persuading consumers to eat food that is already prepared. They "grow, deliver, and cook food for you". Wendell also talks about how people do not care about the quality of their food, but more about the price. At the end of the article Wendell gives a list of things that consumers can do in order to learn more about their food. The one that I think is most important is to prepare your own food. By doing this, you become intimiate with your food because you care about all of the flavors and everything that is going into the dish. To end this summary I would like to end with this quote: "Eaters, that is, must understand that eating takes place inescapably in the world, that it is inescapably an agricultural act, and how we eat determines, to a considerable extent, how the world is used".

Brennan, Billy. In-Person Interview. 14 April 2011.
Billy Brennan talks about what it is like to live without a food allergy. He talks about how an ulcer once dictated what he ate, but now he can eat whatever he wants. He talks about how protein, mostly beef, is apart of his daily food intake. He is a big fan of convenient foods, like fast food or anything micro wave able. He is a father of an 8 month old, so when he is not in South Jersey living in an apartment, he is up in North Jersey taking care of his daughter. This also has a big impact on the way that he eats. Everything has to be easy and quick.

Food Inc. (2008)
Food Inc. is a documentary that talks about our nation's obsession and dependence on fast food.  It was noted that the food industry is now monopolized by just a few large corporations.  As a result, small farmers and businesses are being shut down.  Unfortunately, the large corporations are much more concerned with providing cheap food to the public, rather than quality food.  The movie also goes into some depth about the additives and chemicals that are in much of the food sold in our country, as well as the poor working conditions of the factories where much of our country's beef is produced.

After the explanation, the article goes into the causes, symptoms, preventions, and if you are at risk or not. This article is really helpful if you do have it because it goes into many ways of treating and coping with IBS.
